London Underground SSR Upgrade Programme

The London Underground, Sub Surface Railway comprises the following sections of the London Underground network:

  • Metropolitan line
  • District line
  • Hammersmith & City line
  • Circle line

The system dates from the mid 19th century and is currently the subject of major upgrade activity.

London Underground anticipates that the number of passengers using the Sub Surface Railway will rise considerably over the next few years. In order to manage this anticipated increase in patronage, the capability of the infrastructure to support the train service needs to be enhanced.

The Sub-Surface Railway Upgrade Programme (SUP) will deliver defined passenger capacity and ambience improvements, concurrently with essential condition-driven renewals and refurbishment of assets. Overall, the SUP will deliver.

  • Faster, higher performance rolling stock (S-Stock) to minimise journey time and improve headways.
  • A more frequent train service delivered through a larger fleet of trains with Automatic Train Control capability.
  • A single new Service Control Centre
  • A communications-based signalling system with Automatic Train Supervision, Automatic Train Protection and Automatic Train Regulation
  • Systems that support the rapid recovery of the railway during periods of disruption, the management of the resources that are required to deliver the timetabled service and the dissemination of improved customer information.
  • Control systems with greater capability and flexibility that support a quicker and more effective response during periods of perturbation.

C4 Systems are leading the requirements management and verification & validation (V&V) activities for the programme, within the systems engineering team. The scope of this work includes:

  • Specification of requirements and V&V processes for the programme
  • Development and management of requirements across the programme and within individual projects.
  • Planning and managing the V&V activities for the project leading to acceptance of the integrated system.
